A Massachusetts jury has ordered cigarette maker Lorillard to pay $71 million in damages to the family of a dead smoker for allegedly luring her into smoking Newport Cigarettes, the Boston Globe is reporting.
A Suffolk Superior Court jury awarded $50 million to the estate of Marie Evans, who died of lung cancer in 2002, and $21 million to her son, William Evans, the news organization reports.
Evans was 54 when she died after smoking Newports more than 40 years, according to the Globe.
In testimony that she videotaped before she died, she said she had received free samples of Newport 100s Cigarettes when she was as young as 9 and she traded them for candy.
The case was the first to allege that Lorillard had targeted minority communities with free samples of Newports, a menthol brand more popular among African Americans, the Globe reported.
Lorillard has denied the allegations, company spokesman Gregg Perry told the Globe.
He said the company would appeal the decision.
