How to tell if game mode is on?

OK, I figured out to name the input game from other posts, but it didn't seem to change any tv settings when I checked them. I've turned off enhancements and such afterwards on my own, but I was under the impression there is a game mode that will default stuff down to reduce input lag. I haven't had a tv with input lag from my 360 before, and it's a bit annoying... also forced to use component given that it's a first generation 360.
