Does anybody know the price of new Asus N53SV( sandy bridge) laptops???
XP Drivers for Toshiba A205-S5800
After reading dozens of posts from people who have also wanted to downgrade to Windows XP, I gave it my best shot, and was able to successfully install the Windows XP Professional OS...
HOWEVER:
I was unable to obtain working XP drivers for the WLAN Adapter, Graphics Card, USB, or Display Adapter. None of the drivers from the Vista Restore Disc were compatible, and I couldn't find working XP drivers for the hardware on any of the Toshiba sites. Basically my Device Manager was filled with Yellow Question Marks.
If you're one of the few (I know you're out there) who was able to successfully get this model working 100% with Windows XP, I would greatly appreciate some of your wisdom, before I sell this for a more XP-friendly laptop.
Cheers,
Matt
Asus CPU Whine [work arounds]
(Tested on my N53JF-XR1)
i) Opening the "recording" tab in sound settings (it's like putting a silencer on the CPU whine)
1) Windows orb
2) Control Panel
3) Hardware and Sound
4) Sound
5) Recording
Whenever i'm on the recording tab, the CPU whine becomes silenced to around 40% of what it was. Try it by just pressing the other tabs and the whine comes back at full blast!
ii) Disabling processor idling (increases cpu&gpu temps and power consumption)
1) open regedit (press windows orb and type in regedit.exe and hit enter)
2) navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlPowerPowerSettings
and search for 5d76a2ca-e8c0-402f-a133-2158492d58ad (CTRL-F to search)
3) double click Attributes and change the value from 1 to 0.
4) now right click on the power icon in the tray, go to Power Options,
5) click on change plan settings for your plan, then click on Change advanced power settings,
6) scroll down to Processor power management and you should see a setting called Processor idle disable, change it to "Disable idle". Click on Apply.
by
CPU and GPU temps increased around 10 degrees celcius for me so I opted out of this option.
Please post your solutions and/or results!
So that we can unify the information on CPU whine in one place =]

New Sony Vaio, headphones w/ built in mic dont work
I am the new owner of a (model umber VPC131FM). I have a set of earbuds that also have a microphone attached. On my previous laptops, I could plug the earbuds in to listen to music, movies, etc without issue.
On the Vaio, I can hear the background music (instrumentals, etc), but the vocals are played very quietly. Also, when using Skype, my microphone cuts in and out.
We have determined that the headphone jack cannot accept the 3 ring plug that my earbuds have. Normal headphones work just fine. I can partially insert my earbuds to a point where everything sounds fine, because the microphone section of the plug isn't engaged or powered.
The easy solution is to just use normal earbuds, but my earbuds are also what I use to talk on the phone at work. I listen to Pandora from my laptop, and when my phone rings I just unplug the earbuds from my computer and plug them into my phone. It's a very easy way for me to do this and has worked well for over a year with my old laptop.
Questions:
Is there anything 'wrong' with my vaio, or is this how it is expected to react with three ring earbuds?
If it is normal, is there a way for me to adjust the levels of vocals to music to make it sound normal?
Any help would be great.

I download the correct firmware from the website, and then I extract the files to an empty USB (FAT/FAT32), and yet it keeps saying that no files are found.

Which to keep?
With the cost of the 15 being $500 more than the 14, I could add a 256gb SSD to the 14. I will do that to either that I keep.

Sony VGN-CS11S boot/power problem
I have a VGN-CS11S model (14.1 white) and I have the following problem:
when I am trying to boot it, nothing comes up on screen, neither when trying an external one.
My first thought was that it couldn't boot at all, but the dvd spins up and after a while the fan starts to spin too.
Do you think that is a motherboard issue, or something else, like the charger?
(I've read some similar problems on the web and the charger was mentioned as a solution, but I'm not sure if it fits my case).
Thanks!!

LA46C530F1R MediaPlay Problem (thumbnails, subtitle option)
1. no thumbnails for video, just plain old gray film roll icon
2. subtitle did not show up when there're more than one embedded subtitles
3. some .mkv files are not supported. I checked the codec from my computer and according to the compatibility stuff on the manual book, TV is supposedly able to play the video.
-----------
Made in Indonesia (No localized settings)
Firmware version: T-MSX5DAAC-1010.1
1. I have read a few discussions regarding thumbnails and one of Samsung Tech's solution is to perform 'safely remove' procedure. I already browsed the entire user menu and I cannot find the option for it; not mentioned in the manual book as well. What I always did is to turn off the TV first before removing the USB plug. note: I was kind of curious of the disabled 'plug & play' setting on the user menu.
But I do notice that when I switched sorting mode from basic view to other modes such as 'preferences' or 'by letter/alpabetical', I can see all of the ghost files that the MediaPlay have played before. Those files are really not present in my hard disk, because I deleted it; so of course I can't play it even though MediaPlay listed the file as if it exist.
But that's not important. What's important is that in the manual book, I can see from the pictures in it that instead of plain gray film roll icon, thumbnails supposedly present in the video basic view. I already tried getting a jpeg snapshot of the video and naming it similarly to the video file, and it didn't work.
Question: would a firmware upgrade to 1011.1 solve the problem? would a factory reset on the service menu solve the problem (i know it is not advisable as you samsung guys are not supposed to advice average joe to enter the service menu)?
2. I've come to an understanding that currently MediaPlay would choose the default track; no option for switching audio tracks and subtitle tracks. But in my case, MediaPlay seemed to ignore the subtitle tracks when a video has more than one embedded subtitle. I have checked the embedded-subtitle file type and according to the manual book, MediaPlay supposedly able to at least read one of the subtitle tracks.
To make the subtitle show up, I have to like extract the subtitle tracks and then make it a seperate .srt file, named similarly to the video file. But again, this limits me of having more than one subtitle, as the MediaPlay unable to read the .srt file when it named differently.
Question: Would a firmware upgrade to version 1011.1 solve the problem?
3. I already check the video codec (well... from vlc player) and again... according to the manual book, supposedly MediaPlay is able to play the video file.
Question: would a firmware upgrade solve the problem?
Thanks.
Okay, so I need some suggestions for my buddy!
I suggested an M34 and a T5 for him, both of which are too big... The reason that they are too big is because they are not slates... they are normal laptops. He's determined that even a tablet (CF-18 for example) is too big. His budget is $500 tops and obviously a Toughbook would be the way to go over a Viliv X70 only because of the resolution issue. The native res on the program that he'll be using will NEED 800x600. I was looking at the U1's but they're WAY to expensive...
Thoughts? Suggestions?
ORIGINAL POST FROM CLAES:
Greetings and salutations,
First post here! I have to say this is a very nice and well put together forum. Before I ask my question I do want to put in that I read through scores of posts in this section, general, and others to see if I could find the answer previous to posting.
But I digress.
* I want to put a 7-9" slate in my car for the purpose of listening to music. I really do not have any other need for it (I don't want to use it for wifi, movies, documents, etc).
* Just for the sake of transparency, I would like a slate and not a tablet (swivel screen). I drive a Nissan Altima (just traded in my Jeep Commander) and it does not have a ton of space. I need something small I can velcro to a particular spot. The swivel laptops take up too much space.
* I definitely want a windows based slate. I spent 13 days updating all the id3 tags on my music yet when a program (zune, ipod, adroid OS) pulls the info it still is incorrect despite the id3 tags being correct. My buddy uses a toughbook in his truck and has a program that pulls the artist and song title from the name of the file.
* I would like touch screen that I can use with my fingers and not a stylus. I read on here about different types of touch screens (capacitive and digitizers etc) but do not understand the difference.
* Battery life is not too important I would prefer something with at least 3 hours though.
* Memory capacity: since I am going to be loading music onto this it needs a good amount of space. Ideally something with flash memory since I live in Chicago and it can get mighty cold. I don't mind a hard drive based unit though. In either case I want to be able to upgrade the memory later. Whether that is from upgrading a physical HD (1.8" for the slates?) or inserting SD / microSD I am not as concerned.
* Whether it is XP for win7 it really makes no difference. The program I am going to use works on both and I'd just assume not spend the money on a win7 unit or the resources it requires to run.
* Price point, well I was hoping to get something around $300 but as all things in life you get what you pay for. I really do not want to spend more than $500.
That's about all I can think of. From the research I did, I found the Archos 9 windows PC. That seems to be basically what I want. Only thing is it is more than I really wanted to put into it. It has a ton of features I am uninterested in. It's not that i'm cheep, more that I don't care to spend money on capabilities I don't want / need. +
Thank you for your valuable time and knowledge. I look forward to the advice given.
Cheers,
Claes

Where is the proscessor of x505-898 qosimo?
The last Toshiba I changed the processor in was my old satellite A205, and I basically had to take the whole thing apart I LEARNED ALOT ). And from what I see from the disassemble guide of the x305, that still has to be done. Soooooo, does anyone know if Toshiba made it easier to get to the procressor in the x505 series, or is it still a pain the the backside?

G73H: Borderlands and Black Ops only work right on fresh driver install
As the title implies, I'm having a weird issue with my g73h in that two specific games Borderlands and Black Ops work seemlessly upon a fresh driver install, but as soon as I turn my computer off and then back on they go down to about half the frame rate. Does anyone know why this might be or if there is a solution outside of just putting the laptop to sleep instead of shutting down?
Thanks for any help provided.

Thinkpad X210 wish list
The X210, unlike the X201, is going to be completely redesigned.
What are some things that you expect to be in it, and what are some things that you want to be in it?
Things that we should expect:
-Perhaps one of the USB 2.0 ports turns into a USB 3.0 port
-A thinner design package overall
-The newly designed Thinkpad keyboards
-An HDMI Port added
-128 GB, 256 GB SSD options
Things that I want:
-Better quality screen, higher resolution option
-Webcam standard
-Not only thinner, but a much lighter design, make it so the 9-cell doesn't stick out as much maybe?
-Slightly cheaper to compete with the MacBook Air

Bluray Panasonic UJ-232A and Panasonic UJ-242A differences?
The UJ232A does not support DVD+R Double Layer and DVD-R Double Layer and i use this media and it is cheaper than the bluray alternative.
I haven't been able to locate the specs of the UJ-242A. Are they exactly the same? If not does the UJ242A support DVD+R Double Layer and DVD-R Double Layer? Does anyone know where there is a spec sheet?
In terms of physical design are the drives actually the same with the location of the eject button and pin hole of the bezel?

Z: DPI scaling/1600x900 res
So, I'm considering the Z. Unfortunately, I just got a Dell XPS 15 but I had to take it back because using the 1080p screen with the smaller DPI (which I strongly prefer to use because it lessens distortion) gave me a headache every time I used it. I didn't know that would happen, I had never used a 1080p resolution before.
But I'm kind of worried about the 1600x900 resolution on the VAIO Z. Do you Z owners out there have to adjust the DPI higher with that res? Have you ever had problems with eye strain on the Z? I really can't afford to be dissatisfied with another laptop; I tried out the Z in the store, but obviously, I can't use it long enough to see if it gives me eye strain...

Dell XPS 17 L701x Thread
Current Opinion:
I have had the XPS 17 for a little over two weeks now, and I have used it for regular work and some gaming. Now that I have used it a bit, I still like the machine very much, but...
- There is indeed a high pitched whine which might be related to my second HDD, but I'm not sure about that yet.
- When gaming, left part of the palmrest does get warm. I wouldn't call it hot, but it definately gets warm. Warmer than it got during my Furmark test.
- The screen is OK at best. I can live with it for now as I only really *need* it for work, but I will be trying to put in a decent panel myself later on.
Would I buy it again? Yes. I still think the price/performance ratio of the XPS 17 is very good. Sure, it has some issues, but I haven't found a single perfect laptop yet, and this one comes very close.
Software & Drivers Updates & Manuals:
The new ). Do keep in mind though that every combination of screen + GPU yields a slightly different result, so it might not per perfect for you. Use this with aoubt 50% screen brightness (that's 118cd/m2 and it is what the profiling made me adjust it to).
A positive point for this machine, is that it comes with a caddy / bracket for the 2nd HDD, so you can put in your extra HDD or SSD right away. On the downside, the BIOS doesn't (yet?) support RAID, only ATA/AHCI. As of BIOS A05 there is still no support for RAID. Also please note that some users report their XPS 17 being delivered without the extra caddy.
The HDD on the lower right is the one I added in myself, the other one was factory installed.
This machine also has 4 slots for DDR3 So-Dimm RAM. XPS 17s delivered with an i5 processor have a different motherboard with only 2 slots.
If you have 4 slots, the configuration of these slots is like this:
You can easily reach the RAM and HDD by removing a single screw on the bottom of the machine:
The speakers are quite loud. When I set the volume to maximum, the speakers are loud enough to watch a video in the living room without the need for external speakers. The sound is also quite 'full' and the bass is nice.

I don't game much, so I could probably only run a demo if one is available. I haven't used the machine much yet, so I cannot give you a full in-depth review of the machines quality just yet. This will change |
V6133EU no external monitor out!
it has a faulty wifi card so i picked the thing up for free off someone who didnt want it (the wifi card isnt recognised and doesnt work). apparently its from the range of laptops where the motherboard warps slightly under heat. i know a load of these HP compaq ones have faulty VGA chips (some that are ball grid arrays where the solder cracks).
Basically i cant get the external monitor out working. Running windows XP
- when i plug in a 2nd display it shows on the properties and recognises the monitor but nothing goes out to the display.
i've tried 3 monitors. 2 do nothing, one of them, if i connect the monitor from startup, during booting it has the XP logo and all the BIOS info on the display but then when it gets onto the OS it goes crazy. like only the colour blue is being displayed. tried booting from an ubuntu live CD and, again, the 2nd screen looks fine until the proper window manager starts up. then it just becomes one blue screen.
Geforce Go 6150 VGA. the only drivers are Compaq's own ones. So i uninstalled the current ones and installed the latest from the compaq website, however they are 4 years old.
Just wondering if theres anything else I can do with it. whether it is another known fault with this laptop or anything.
thanks for the help, i'm doing programming on it and the extra monitor would be really useful!
dont want to buy another laptop really just for this.
thanks,
dan gent
E6410 Owner's Thread
The specs on this one are as follows.
$1,465.62
# Dual Core i7 Processor at 2.66Ghz
# 4GB Memory
# Intel 6300 Wireless
# Ultrasharp 14.1" 1400x900
# Discrete Nvidia Quadro Graphics
# 3MP Webcam
# Backlit Keyboard
# 9 Cell
# 3YR battery Warranty
# 3YR Standard
# Latitude Flash
# 250GB 7200RPM
(DVD/RW Dead out of the box.)
First off, out of the box it's almost hard to tell the difference between the aside from the silver top.
I was slightly disappointed as I was expecting the silver metallic top like in the Latitude 13 and M6500. What you get a basically a silver top with black accents in it. (See pictures)
As you get closer you can see they re molded the bottom part of the palmrest to be more rounded and smooth. The Screen release button is now easier to press along with the SD card being more accessible.
They re-located the ambient sensor to the top of the LCD and added bumpers on the LCD frame and on the actual base of the LCD to prevent scratching. There is now a dual array microphone.
Other details include improved speakers. looks to have added a "tweeter" if you can call it that along with the standard speaker that was on the E6400.
Some of the rubber bumpers are different on the bottom of the laptop.
The wireless switch is now easy to move because the plastic slider was re-designed. The rest of the palmrest plastics are matte finish like the updated E6400.
Other than that performance is on par with a loaded E6400 with a P9700 @ 2.8Ghz.
Boot and shutdown is almost identical. Real world tasks seem to be about the same. I will monitor battery life and do some benchmarks.
One major thing to note is the new version of Latitude Flash is very good.
On the Z600 and other models it was slow and pointless.
This new version for the E6410 is quick and usable since they added a music player and picture viewer, so I would recommend adding it over the reader software version if you have the option.
The browser now supports flash videos and things like Youtube which is a nice addition.
See attached images for more detail.

I am just going to blurt it out, I tried a stick of Cosair RAM that I got on sale in my CF-29N, and it not only booted, it seems to be running fine. But, how to know?
In Windows 7 Pro it shows 2.25 GB of RAM, I have only 256 on my mainboard, and 1.99 of total "usable" installed memory.
Perhaps, I just got lucky, or it could be because I only had 256MB on the mainboard, or maybe I will have problems later.
So, I am looking for a good RAM checking program that will let me know if this is working as well as it seems. Any ideas?

Also, the $150 Sony 3d glasses - yes I have a pair on order, but does anyone have experience watching Sony 3d with other manufacturer's glasses, such as Polaroid's 3d glasses that sell for around $30? Is there a considerable viewing degradation in appearance while using 'non-Sony' 3d glasses?
Any advice and help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time and expertise.
Tutorial sharing media on external drives PC Share Manager
Tested on Windows Vista and Samsung BD-C6500 and it works flawlessly.
I have taken the time to compile this tutorial because I was pulling my hair out trying to share an external drive through PC Share Manager and finally figured it out. I'm hoping to help you all avoid that.
1. Open command prompt as administrator
Click on "Start", "All Programs", "Accessories", then right click on "Command Prompt" and click on "Run As Administrator"
Accept any warnings and grant permission
2. Open up "My Computer" and see what drive letter is assigned to your external drive. This works for both USB flash drives and external USB Hard Drives.
If your drive is assigned letter F:, then type the following in Command Prompt window and hit enter:
mklink /d c:samsungmovies f:shared
Note: You will need to replace "samsungmovies" with whatever you want your folder to be named and you will also need to replace "shared" to whatever folder your media files are stored in.
For example:
If your external drive is letter "F:" and your media files are in a folder called movies in the root of "F:", then you would type this into command prompt instead:
mklink /d c:samsungmovies f:movies
Once this is done and you hit enter, you will see a message that says Symbolic Link Created
Now close Command Prompt Window
3. Now, open up PC Share Manager and look for your newly shared folder under "Computer", "Local Disk (C:)"
In this case, it would be "samsungmovies" but you can make this whatever you want as I mentioned in the above Note
4. Now, just share that folder like you would share any of the other folders and you?re good to go. Remember to refresh DB or click on Set Changed State in order for changes to take effect.
I hope this helps.
Good luck all.

upgrading LCD for higher resolution...
I have a Vostro 1500 w/ Nvidia 8600m gt.
Today I dropped it while running and cracked the LCD display.
I hooked it up to an external monitor, and everything works fine, so it's just the screen that's messed up.
I've decided to try and use this mishap to upgrade my res from 1280x800 to 1680x1050.
Any LCD for a Vostro 1500 should work right? Can I use the original inverter for a WXGA screen on a new WSXGA+?
Simple question about hp dv6z series laptop
Hello i am considering purchasing this laptop with the minimal processor which is the AMD Turion(TM) II Dual-Core Mobile Processor P540 (2.4GHz, 2MB L2 Cache)
will it bottleneck the 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA] ?
Qosmio x505-q894 brief review
My very brief and disjointed review (damn you Chiro for setting the bar so high):
I received my 894 today and so far everything is great.
It is huge but not significantly larger than other 17 inch laptops I looked at.
It is also heavy, but not nearly as heavy as my desktop.
I chose the 894 because I use an i7 processor in my desktop and I feel that it may allow me an extra year of viable gaming life for the unit; also because I wanted the backlit keyboard and I have to pay tax on Amazon in my state so I was buying from Newegg which does not carry the 893.
I got this for semi portable gaming in my house mainly--I'm tired of being stuck in my basement office to play--and so far it is working well.
I installed WoW and cranked the settings up and it runs great.
Also starcraft2 is installed but I haven't played it much yet.
The styling looks great, the unit boots fast and runs really fast.
The slick keys on the keyboard are a little odd but I am having no trouble typing on it.
No trouble with the small space bar others have mentioned or with the buttons on the side of the keyboard.
The area above the keyboard near the screen has gotten warm while I have been gaming but the bottom is totally cool to the touch.
Also it is very quiet--you can't hear it at all with normal household noises going on.
I had to uninstall the toshiba hard drive protector because it parks the drive heads with the slightest movement of the laptop, otherwise it didn't really come with that much bloatware--some Toshiba apps I may uninstall later, a short term norton's that I uninstalled in favor of free Avast and some tool bars I uninstalled.
Sound is really good for a laptop--laptops I compare it to are business class dell and lenovo units which it blows away.
Screen looks great to me but I may not be as picky as others.
Ok there is my stream of consciousness review--I'll try to come back to update my reveiw and answer any questions over the next few days.

How to use 7 in 1 Card Reader (MS/MS PRO/MS DUO/SD/Mini-SD/MMC/RSMMC)-(MR510 chip)
Hello, I have a sager 5793 which came with a Built-in 7 in 1 Card Reader (MS/MS PRO/MS DUO/SD/Mini-SD/MMC/RSMMC)- (MR510 chip), which I am assuming is used to read memory cards for digital cameras.
Well my digital camera just took a sh!t on me, and says I need to reformat the whole thing in order for it to work again.
So I want to save all my pictures from the memory card to my computer beforehand, and I'm assuming I can use this 7 in 1 card reader which came with my laptop.
( I have tried saving them to my computer the normal way with a USB cable however it wont let me due to this format error )
I've opened up 2 slots on the right side of the laptop which I have previously never opened before.
One had a rubber plug in it which I took out and tried to fit my memory card inside with no luck, and the other was a black plastic sliding piece with what looks like little compartments on the bottom to hold cards.
I also tried fitting my memory card into each of these compartments with no luck.
I have no idea if either one of these things is the 7 in 1 reader so any help would be appreciated.
Oh my digital camera is an olympus fe-230, and the memory card says olympus xD-Picture Card M2GB.
Thanks.

Zalman NC2000-strange noise coming from the fans
I have been using the nc2000 for a year or so, it works great so far, but recently when the fans spin on max speed, there are some annoying noise coming from fans.
I thought it came from my internal laptop fans first, but later I found its the cooler.
It doesn't happen all the time, like the noise will keep on going like 5 min then it will disappear, is this a sign the cooler is failing? I cleaned the fan blades with compressed air, but it couldn't remove all dust clings to the blades, the noise still happens.
Any idea why does it happen? I do turn on the cooler most of the time, mostly on max speed, will it reduce its life span? I would hate to shell out 60$ for another quality cooler if it failed.

i7 920XM in Toshiba x505-898??
Woops sorry for the heading I meant i7 940xm.
My buddy wants to settle a debt and trade me a i7 940xm mobile processor for the debt.
I just got a qosimo x505-989 with an i7 740qm 2 weeks ago.
I know the qosimo is a pain to take apart, but I've upgraded a processor in an older verison.
And I'm off the next 2 weeks for the holiday, so I have the time.
1] will the i7 940xm work in the qosimo 505??
2] even if it does work will it run too hot??
Thanks for any replies
Happy Holidays
Thinkpad X210 wish list
So the X210 is going to come out when the new Intel "Sandy Bridge" processors come out.
The X210, unlike the X201, is going to be completely redesigned.
What are some things that you expect to be in it, and what are some things that you want to be in it?
Things that we should expect:
-Perhaps one of the USB 2.0 ports turns into a USB 3.0 port
-A thinner design package overall
-The newly designed Thinkpad keyboards
-An HDMI Port added
-128 GB, 256 GB SSD options
Things that I want:
-Better quality screen, higher resolution option
-Webcam standard
-Not only thinner, but a much lighter design, make it so the 9-cell doesn't stick out as much maybe?
-Slightly cheaper to compete with the MacBook Air
U150 vs X201 ? Rewritten, suggestion pls. Thx

Help me boot m570ru off USB...... (blindly)
So uh...
I have a m570ru here with a failed video card.
The failed card is was a 8700m GT...
So basically the BIOS version it has right now is probably one of the earliest and it doesn't support any cards I have.
So I have to update the BIOS/EC blindly.
All this would be fine.
Except for the fact that USB drive seems to be excluded from the boot order.
Can someone with a m570ru give me an idea of how I could set USB boot to priority in the BIOS, totally blindly?
Thanks.

1st internal investigation of a 29 w/?
OK so I woke up yesterday am and my touchscreen was not working.
Checked FAQ and sure enough it was racing off to the side.
Tried the toothpick but no go.
With a little hesitation I opened it up, just the screen and its back.
I'll make it short and won't talk about the removal of unnecessary screws and forgetting the latch with 1st reassembly and just say that disassembly must have released enough pressure for whatever it was to fall out because it is working fine now.
My question is what is the best thing to clean the internal screen surfaces, reverse side of TS and actual face of LCD (DN alcohol?) and where is the best place to find replacement screws.
I was very careful and all screws are present but I can see that there magical disappearance is possible.
Also does anyone add extra protection to there toughbooks when reassemble; extra sealants, home made gaskets, thread lockers.
Thanks

CF-VDW07 Wireless Display HOW-TO...
How to get your CF-VDW07 display WORKING.
I FINALLY got my CF-VDW07M working on my machine, and WITH the Atheros AR5006X Mini-PCI card I have installed.
Once I get a second WiFi card installed, I'll have my internet on the machine again...
First, GO HERE:
http://www.panasonic.ca/English/cust...stomercare.asp
Click on DOWNLOADS.
Click on software, drivers & firmware.
Enter CFVDW07 in the Model Number Dialog Box.
Click search.
This will list ALL available downloads for these displays.
Download the following 2 zip files:
http://www.panasonic.ca/PDP/Software...de_v200l13.zip
This is the firmware upgrade for the handheld; it makes it possible to use the meiWDS software listed below:
http://www.panasonic.ca/PDP/Software...s_k-04-224.zip
This latest version of meiWDS works on many different models, Panasonic and otherwise, including the CF-07.
Unzip the firmware upgrade file to its own directory; read and understand BOTH the README file and the UpgradeWirelessDisplayV2.doc files BEFORE you begin.
There are TWO versions of the firmware updater; one for transflective models, one for high-brightness models.
If you use the wrong one, you may turn your handheld INTO A BRICK.
You need a SERIAL DB9 FEMALE to DB9 FEMALE Crossover or NULL MODEM cable for this; it will have BOTH ends that look like the plug on an OLD SERIAL MOUSE (Look at the serial port on the Handheld to see the one you want to be able to plug into), and it will be wired as seen in the image below.
You will need an AC adapter for your CF-VDW07 as well as the one for your laptop.
At this point, you are ready to upgrade the firmware on the handheld; follow the directions in the UpgradeWirelessDisplayV2.doc file.
Once you've successfully upgraded the firmware in your handheld as seen in the last panel, it's time to install meiWDS.
This is pretty much self explanatory; it will prompt you a couple times, then ask if you want to reboot.
Reboot.
Now that you've got your handheld ready and meiWDS ready, all that remains is to set up the wireless connection.
This is where it gets sticky.
Get this document:
http://go.notebookreview.com/?id=525...WND_Manual.pdf
As before, read it and understand it.
(If possible) The steps are as follows; how you do it depends ENTIRELY on YOUR Wireless Client software.
First, you create a NEW WIFI PROFILE.
Name it something easy, like Wireless Display.
Make it an AD HOC or PEER TO PEER connection.
Turn OFF security, Turn OFF LEAP (If present).
Set to WIRELESS B ONLY.
(This is only to prevent unnecessary interference; it will also work in AUTO mode as well)
At this point you need to turn on the handheld as shown in the directions; get the necessary SSID as generated by handheld, (cfvdw07-xxxxx) and the necessary IP ADDRESS as generated by handheld.
(This will vary according to what class address you use; as we are private users, FCC regs dictate it should be class C)
Enter the SSID into your new profile.
Activate it.
Go to Network Connections in Device Manager; right click on your WiFi connection, then Properties.
(Or whatever route you prefer to get to TCP/IP settings) Click on ;Use the following IP address;.
Enter the IP ADDRESS & SUBNET MASK given by your handheld.
DO NOT enter anything for DNS Server.
Click OK.
Left-click on the meiWDS icon in your SysTray; click on Password in the resultant dialog box.
Enter password collected from Setup screen of handheld.
(Default is ;wdsp; )
At this point, you SHOULD be able to click on CONNECT at the bottom of the Network Settings window on your handheld, and it should try to connect.
It will show as ;CONNECTING to xxx.xx.xxx.xxx; (depending on the IP address of your PC) then ;Receiving initial Screen;.
Then...
WAHEY! CONNECTION!
If, like me, it shows ;ASSOCIATED; at bottom of GENERAL tab in Menu screen but eventually times out saying ;Failed to initialize session;, don't FREAK.
This REALLY IS A GOOD THING.
It means the WiFi connection is there, it's just being blocked.
If you have Norton, McAfee, Trend, AVG, or any other AntiVirus/Spyware suite running, try disabling it.
If you have Windows Firewall turned on, try disabling it.
If EITHER of these work, YAY! you're ALMOST THERE!
If your fault was Windows Firewall, (as mine was) click on the ;Exceptions; tab, and add an exception for TCP Port 11900.
Click OK, then OK.
Make sure the ;Allow Exceptions; box is ticked ON.
Close Windows Firewall.
Things should now work JUST AS THEY DID with Windows Firewall turned off.
YAY! You're DONE!
If it was with another Internet Security program that was your problem, don't fret.
You should be able to create an exception in them for meiWDS, and/or TCP Port 11900.
Now that you have a handle on how to get hooked up on a simple peer to peer connection, you may want to experiment with the INFRASTRUCTURE MODE Connection.
Remember, you will have to have a dedicated WAP unless you wish to flashback to the ;Rocks & Spears Security; of the stone age of wireless connectivity.
Also, now that you have a connection to the handheld you can use the WdspSU utility (Installed in your Programs Menu with meiWDS) to change the IP addresses as you see fit for your own networking strategy, plus you can enable the rudimentary security available on Wireless B.
Also, see these threads for our collected tinkering on this subject:
CF-VDW07 Wireless Display Install/Config
CF-VDW07 Display
Toughbook wireless display
All right, you maniacs!
Take what I've collected here AND GET REMOTIN'!
Oh...
and BTW - an extra special THANKS to rcx for the last piece of the puzzle!

CPU Overheating in X61 Thinkpad
Hi I just got a used x61 Thinkpad in good condition off eBay.
After a clean install of Windows 7 and other programs, I noticed the CPU temp runs really hot on this x61.
83 celcius at full and 55~68 at idle.
Then I searched for the issue online and found out it's a common issue on x61 processor.
Is there a step-by-step repaste DIY I can follow? I will clean the dust in the fan while I'm at it.
I tried searching but no luck.
Inputs are appreciated.

Can a single USB port power a 7200 RPM 2.5" HDD?
I was about to buy an external HDD enclosure.
I've seen many that come with cables with 2 USB ports on one end (for power).
I do not want to have to use 2 USBs to power this drive, but I will be using my ST9320423AS 7200 HDD inside.
Now I'm thinking that since its a 7200 RPM drive, I will need 2 USBs to power it...is this the case? What would happen if I purchased an enclosure that was powered only by one USB port? I am not worried about speed, I just need it to work.
Seagate has these specs for the drive:
Startup current, +5V (max): 1.0 amps
Seek power (typical): 2.2 watts
Read power (typical): 2.1 watts
Write power (typical): 2.2 watts
Idle mode, low power (typical): 0.69 watts
Standby mode: 0.20 watts (typical)
Sleep mode: 0.20 watts (typical)
Voltage tolerance (including noise): +5V

DV7 triple boot w/3 different storage devices?
I have a DV7 quad edition that currently has a 500gb HDD with Windows 7 installed and a 120gb hdd installed in the second bay.
After I finally figured out that the bios doesn't offer the ability to boot directly to anything but the first HDD and the optical drive I've gotten curious as to using a chain-loading setup to potentially run a third storage device for a third OS, likely Linux of some flavor.
I didn't opt for the OTA HD tuner and thus have an unused mini PCI-E slot that I'm thinking about filling with a SSD.
Has anyone tried this or anything like it? I can't think of any obvious difficulties I will come across given that the BIOS also doesn't seem to have the built in ability to boot via PCI-E or over ESATA for that matter but I don't see why chain-loading won't solve this problem - assuming the mini PCI-E slot is accessible just after POST is complete.

Best 17" semi-gaming notebook?
Hi!
I'm looking to replace my current Dell Inspiron 9300 which is 5 years old.
I loved it but it's getting old.
It's a 1900 x 1200 (I like more pixels and tiny icons/font).
Budget isn't a big concern but I don't want to go crazy paying $3k.
Somewhere in the $1500 to $2000 seems fine plus or minus a few hundred.
Thank you very much for helping me find my next laptop!

Laptop for Architecture
Hey, I am looking for a laptop that is ideal for architecture programs and work.
I am doing my masters in Architecture and have to use programs such as autocad, 3dmax, sketchup, vray, photoshop, etc.
From what I've garnered, the laptop needs to have a powerful cpu, good graphics card, and a lot of ram.
So far I've come up with 2 options:
Macbook pro 15"
Intel Core i5 2.53GHz
4GB ddr3 ram
500gb hard drive
NVIDIA GT 330M 256mb
around $2000
and
Dell Precision M4500 15.6"
Intel Core i5 dual core 2.66GHz
4GB ddr3 ram
500gb hard drive
NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M 1GB
around $2000
I know they're the same price and the Dell specs are a bit better, but it's a mac, my previous laptop was a mac, so I know specs don't tell the whole story.
Also, from what I've heard, mac's are better for design and such programs.
I was also looking at the higher macbook pro which has an i7 process 2.66GHz, and NVIDIA GT330M 512mb graphics card.
It's about $200 more than the one I listed above.
So I have a couple questions.
Out of those 3, which would be ideal for an architecture student to run all the programs needed (auto cad, archicad, 3dmax, sketchup, vray, etc).
May I add that I am very tight on $$ so that's why I'm considering the slightly cheaper model if the difference between them won't be very significant.
Thanks in advance for any help, it is greatly appreciated.
P.S I am a noob when it comes to this stuff, so dont use such big terms! lol

But I can't find option for this in Lenovo W510's shopping page(only "Smart Card Slot" option).
Any idea? Thanks!
Lenovo Returns
So my brother ordered a T410s through IBM epp during a cyber monday sale with me telling him all along that new models will be out in a month.
I gave him some relief though by stating that they likely offer a 30 day return so if he likes the new stuff he can get an exchange.
Well now its roughly 3 weeks since payment and he still hasnt received it.
More importantly, Ive discovered that not only is it not a 30 day return policy, but there is a 15% restocking fee, even for unopened items.
!?
Its 2010, almost 2011, and we're still forced to deal with such terrible return policies? I cant think of any other retailers with such a policy besides BestBuy.
In addition, the 21 day return is from the date the invoice is sent.
How does that make sense?
Anyway, I came here to ask whether ordering through IBM epp will give him some sort of preferential treatment in getting that fee waived.
Anyone have experience with lenovo returns and knows how they handle this stuff?
Thanks.
I am not a Beast! (X7200 vs M17x)
The x7200 is actually just a little bigger than Alienware M17x.
With all of the talk of x7200 beastiality, I thought the x7200 was substantially bigger in every dimension and much heavier too.
Now I guess the beastiality revers to the power more than the size.
x7200
12.13 Lbs
Height: 2.2 - 2.4"
Width: 16.5"
Depth: 11.2"
M17x
Weight: 11.68 pounds
Height: 2.02 inches to 2.11 inches Front to Back
Width: 16.0 inches
Depth: 12.7 inches
The x7200 is 9% taller, 3% wider, but it has 11% less depth.
Its depth makes the x7200 more than an inch shorter.
The x7200 is almost 10% heavier but that doesn't include the x7200's power anvil.
I can't imagine the size differences being much of an issue.
The x7200's more weight might matter if you travel with it regularly.
That leaves the noise as my biggest reservation to buying an x7200.
The cycling on and off that I have heard about sounds annoying.
"new" computer for child from used computer
I would like to take my old notebook and make it look ;new; for my 9 year old.
Someone suggested adding a skin.
Do they stay on well enough? Any suggestions? The unit is a Dell Latitude 120L.
Any additional suggetions for making it look new? I'm a novice - any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Acer Aspire 5740G BIOS hacking (Switchable Graphics - not yet)
This notebook was proclaimed to have Switchable Graphics (ATI Mobility Radeon 5xxx & Intel Core i3/i5 Integrated Graphics).
Unfortunately there were probably some issues with drivers prior to release the notebook, so Acer has disabled this feature by software (BIOS) (downloads mentioned it many times).
I've been trying to enable the support Switchable Graphics, but without success yet.
Well, there were some interesting things I've discovered yet and I want to share those with other people interested in getting SG in their Aspire 5740G.
Maybe somebody could help to get this done.
(if you are interested in the full story, just continue to the second post)
So far we can:
Enable hidden "Intel" tab in BIOS Setup.
Hidden "Intel" tab can be enabled by setting the CMOS token 0x141 to value 1.
See the second post in this thread.
Chapter 4 describes the process of setting token's value.
WARNING: DO NOT SET "MCH Control Sub-Menu"→"Primary Display" TO EITHER "IGD" OR "SG" ! (unless you know how to unbrick your BIOS)

Mousepad with best glide + Durability?
Right so I got a Destructor last Christmas but it seems like this pad wears out very quickly.
I got shiny spots on it already and those areas offer up a lot of resistance.
So I went and got a Steelseries SX thinking that it would combine the smoothness of the Destructor with the increased durability of aluminum.
But while it's very sturdy and durable it is not very smooth at all.
It does not offer the same kind of glide as the Destructor.
I have an Alienware TactX (rebranded G9) if anyone's wondering.
So what's a really good mousepad with excellent glide that also has good durability?
I heard good things about the I-1 / I-2 from Steelseries as well?
Earbud headset
I am just curious if there's anything like this.
Been wanting to get a new headset but not like the traditional-padded ear with mic.
I'm trying to find an earbud style like this
http://images17.newegg.com/is/image/...49-V01?$S300W$
but as a set.
One mic/earbud for one ear and another earbud for the other ear.
I'm specifically looking for this kind of design.
Not the typical cellphone usage earbud style with the tiny mic piece on the wire.
Any ideas?
Weak Wireless Connection
Hi,
I have a Toshiba L20 pro lap top.
I have today replaced the hinges and part of the silver base trim.
During which I re-fittted the wireless LAN.
Everything now works fine but the signal strength on the wireless connection is seriously weak.
We have to be in the same room as the router to get a signal.
I have checked the connections and they seem fine.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Dave

Lorillard ordered to pay $71M to Newport 100s Ciga
Lorillard ordered to pay $71M to Newport 100s Cigarettes smoker's family
(Reference http://www.olymall.com)
A Massachusetts jury has ordered cigarette maker Lorillard to pay $71 million in damages to the family of a dead smoker for allegedly luring her into smoking Newport Cigarettes, the Boston Globe is reporting.
A Suffolk Superior Court jury awarded $50 million to the estate of Marie Evans, who died of lung cancer in 2002, and $21 million to her son, William Evans, the news organization reports.
Evans was 54 when she died after smoking Newports more than 40 years, according to the Globe.
In testimony that she videotaped before she died, she said she had received free samples of Newport 100s Cigarettes when she was as young as 9 and she traded them for candy.
The case was the first to allege that Lorillard had targeted minority communities with free samples of Newports, a menthol brand more popular among African Americans, the Globe reported.
Lorillard has denied the allegations, company spokesman Gregg Perry told the Globe.
He said the company would appeal the decision.
