Sony Vaio VPCZ138GG

I just upgrade from VGN SZ79N to VPC Z138GG

I'm very happy with the new cazy power laptop.



But now I have some problem with my vaio

I need to split the partion to 2 drives. and i need to install windows 7 ultimate clean install.



Then when I install new windows I delete the OEM partion.

Now my vaio not stable and i need to restore to factory default.

But when I boot to recovery mode by Assist button it not going to recovery mode but it boot to the windows.



I can't restore to factorey default any more.

And body can help me to find the recovery disk please?

If you did not make a set of recovery discs before doing what you've mentioned, then unfortunately, you'll have to contact Sony to buy a set of recovery discs from them.

You should be able to find the DVDs for Win7 online, then use the serial number from your Z to activate it. The drivers specific to the Z can be found on Sony's support site.



Edit: Oops, didn't realize you are already using the Win Ultimate disks. Anyway, downloading the drivers from Sony should bring it pretty much to the same state.

Don't know what Sony charges, but I've never seen a mfr charge more than $20, and I think they are the safest bet.

that says 5GB max... win ultimate partition is like 15GB? I don't think compressing will be that much less. I think the best option will be to get a file of Win 7 ultimate then just install that and update drivers accordingly

So F10 at bootup doesn't work? I messed up my factory installation reset once on a sony and was hitting my head on the wall with messed up applications until I tried that by chance and voila, I am good now. I think the data remains there unless you do a secure clean using a program.

The OP wiped the recovery partition that's why he/she's asking for a copy of it. But otherwise, on the Vaio Z, pushing the "ASSIST" key will do the same thing: cause the Z to boot into recovery/diagnostic mode.

You have the old subtilte inside the mkv issue and then you progress to encodings that don't work.

The advice is simple. Use any encoding that does work. You can lose a lot of time on this or you can re-encode.

B1930N Screen Flicker

I may occasionally get some vertical screen flickering (ie. a few lines down the screen) and the whole pc jams.

Was wondering if this is due to the monitor vga cables not being connected properly, or is this a hardware fault, or is this a Samsung monitor issue...

Yes and I have to hard boot the pc as the screen problem freezes the operating system.

Unlikely a freeze of the OS is caused by anything (such as a cable or a monitor). So it's something inside the case. Could be videocard or the driver. If it's onboard video (on the motherboard, not a separate card) it could be bad RAM also.

Thanks for these leads. I ran Memtest86+ from a live Ubuntu cd and it showed some RAM errors, so I'm guessing I should ask the supplier for replacement memory?

I ordered a w520 on the 19th Originally said estimated ship date of may may 4 changed to may 2 today. Only changes on the default quad core mchine were 1 dimm instead of 2 quadro 2000 and intel centrino ultimate.

Ordered an x120e on 4/14. Original estimated shipping date was 4/28, but they moved me back to 5/4. =

I picked the E-240 $399 base config and upgraded the CPU to E-350 for $40. With the CPU upgrade it's exactly the same as the $450 E-350 config.

I ordered a T420 with Optimus graphics on 4/13. Original estimated shipping date was 4/26. It shipped out on 4/19 and should make it to my door by 4/26.



Generally, Lenovo's site gives the long estimate. I'm sure they do this because sometimes parts shortages or high demand can change ship times, and they'd rather give you that long estimate and deliver faster than fail to meet a date they've given at time of order.



Occasionally, they push back the ship date too. Usually this is due to unforeseen circumstances, like a supply-chain problem (just as an example, what if an important part comes from an area of Japan hit by the earthquake/tsunami?)



They do take longer than Dell --but Dell has assembly plants in North America, benefiting US/Canadian/Mexican customers, and Lenovo does not.

Customs takes place in KY. It will go from AK to KY, where it will stay a day (at least in my case), that next day it will go through customs and to your state. Overall with standard shipping it took 3 or 4 days to get from HK to IL

I thought it could take place in either. US Customs does have a location in Anchorage. I could be incorrect, though.



3-4 days is an improvement over my last two ThinkPads by about a day or two. Most of that delay was in Customs. I didn't order at peak traffic times (generally early to mid summer), so perhaps Customs has gotten more efficient.

Toshiba recovery disk - What all does it erase

I have a qosmio X505-Q892, and from past couple of days windows is acting up. I feel I may have to use my "System restore" discs I created when I bought the laptop.



I have a few questions regarding that.

1. What is the procedure- Do I simply boot from the first disk and follow instructions

2. What all gets erased - Toshiba says all my programs and windows and files will get erased. I understand C drive my get formatted. But I have 4 partitions C drive has windows and few programs, E drive has photos and documents F drive has all programs installed, and G has videos and media files. So will it just erase drive C, or erase all the partitions? Is there a way where I can simply erase my programs and C drive, and keep my data and media intact?

Reformat with disks:



-Insert Disk #1

-turn off lappy

-turn on lappy

-press F12 while powering on

-select cd/dvd boot

-press enter follow prompts



I've only used the option to restore the pc to factory settings (like you just took it out of the box). So, this option erases EVERYTHING.



I've never used any other option.

I'm a Graphic Design Artist and Video Editor And I see this Dell XPS 15 I would like to buy for $995.00. I'm going to be doing some heavy video editing at 60fps with Adobe Premiere, Or photoshop but not all at once, The only thing that is going to be running in the background is Skype and Few internet browsers and itunes, I was scared when I looked at the Processor only being 1.73GHz until i read about the 2.93GHz Turbo Mode it kicks to when I need more apps open, I'm not sure how that works.



Will I see a difference between a



Intel Core i7-740QM Quad Core Processor 1.73GHz (2.93GHz Turbo Mode)



And



Intel Core i7-840QM Quad Core Processor 1.86GHz(3.2GHz Turbo Mode)



I am on a budget and the Intel Core i7-840QM is $150 more and it's only 720p display, when the Intel Core i7-740QM is 1080p..



So you lose and gain lol..



So I would love the Intel Core i7-740QM Quad Core Processor 1.73GHz (2.93GHz Turbo Mode) with the 1080p display. But i would hate to regret it if the Processor ends up being to slow.

The 740QM is not a slow processor. It'll be just fine



The screen makes much more of a difference than the processor, so I'd go for whichever one has got the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display.



Also I'd recommend comparing the price of an older XPS 15 with that of a new XPS 15 with the i7-2630QM and the 1080p display, to decide which one's a better deal.

But he won't really be able to feel the performance difference. the only difference will be battery life as earlier i7 did not support switchable graphics. I expect around 2-3 hrs of battery life on the i7 740qm

G53JW-XA1: Cannot disable post screen!

Hello everybody,

As I'm new to this forum, i beleive somebody or a G53JW user can help me, i'm a programmer and just bought a Asus G53JW-XA1 from Costco, it looks glossy and fine though i found out something that i disliked too much, here it is:



I searched everywhere in BIOS (vesion 209) and there's no option to disable POST splash screen during boot up, there's only option to change splash screen to animated type or to still image type.



I downloaded the EManual documention of the notebook and though it says:



If you press [Tab] during the splash screen, standard boot information such as the BIOS version can be seen.



...that's not true! I'm not able to get classic POST screen which shows all the happenings about hardware during boot up. Though i hit TAB, logo still displayed.



Is there anybody noticed this issue with G53JW-XA1?

Welcome to the forum, DO you mean the list of drivers displayed when you boot to safe mode? (F8 after post)

Have U tried any of the boot options in MSconfig?

I think this is a windows parameter not a BIOS setting.

Have you ever been able to get the info you want on startup with a windows 7 machine?



BTW are you trying to trouble shoot a problem or is this just your preference?

Hello, i mean the POST (power-on self-test) screen which displays information about peripherals and hardware when you first power on the PC just like every computer and motherboard report before starting loading Windows. Windows 7 can boot just fine.



I and any normal computer user want to see this detailed POST screen (sample) ->

Asus totally forgot to include disabling POST screen image in G53JW-XA1, or please let me know how to see actual POST (BIOS) screen during boot up.



And yes, it's a problem! Not preference, what am i supposed to do without seeing actual POST screen (but with Asus splash logo) if a hardware error occurs in future? Asus must have thought that!

You can just Esc to see the POST messages.

I thought the same but there's no option like "quiet" or "silent" boot to disable.



When you press Esc, it only lists available drives to boot from. Not the POST screen.

yep frosty,but IMHO Asus mustn't let us taste this pain...It's not acceptable not to have an option to see actual POST screen, as i'm a bit experienced about computers, this is the first computer i've seen without any option to disable splash screen. I've used to work with Asus mobos but all of them have at least one option to disable fancy boot logo in BIOS, even i'm consent to have this ability on boot up by pressing TAB, but no avail.

As i stated, pressing ESC only shows list of devices to boot from, not detalied POST screen. Sometimes i'm asking myself, did i do right by buying a gaming notebook whilst my main purpose is programming (software development)

Tired of how frictiony your Asus UL-XX touchpad is?

Well, I was. The touchpad on the UL30a literally the worst part of an otherwise AAA laptop. So I looked around and discovered "touchpad protectors". They are very similar to screen protectors to phones (actually, I can't really tell a difference). I found free + shipping ones from here and they work like a charm! The material is matte, as far as I know. Leaves no fingerprints and there is almost no friction. Great to the touch. Now I am VERY satisfied with this laptop!

Also, would it be a CF-WBKB191VM? I believe it came from a MK 3. Do MK 3 Keyboards fit on ALL CF-19's?

Panasonic is very arbitrary with their part numbers. They seem to randomly change them when they get in new shipments. As kb9kst said, I'm nearly positive they are common across the entire CF-18-19 series, and there are not a lot of other models which have keyboards with the same physical footprint. They have none of the old quirks for backlight power, so if it fits it will work.

DELL XPS M1530

I've had my laptop for three years. I started getting the dreaded black screen, repair your computer or start windows normally. It never did "repair" itself and then one morning I couldn't get it to start period.

My question, can I take the hard-drive out and see if I can get any info off of it by hooking up as an external drive? I'm not under warranty!

Also is it possible to replace the hard drive? or is this just a waste of my money?


I need to purchase a new laptop, however with the track record Dell is having w/ problems who/what do you really suggest?

Yes, to both questions. Take out the old drive and put it into an external USB enclosure for SATA laptop drives, and in all likelihood you'll be able to recover the data.
And obviously, you can buy any standard SATA laptop drive to replace it. Then you'll need to reinstall the operating system, instructions here. If you did not receive an OS disc with your system, you can order replacement discs from this page.

Nvidia GT 540m Verde Driver Release Question

Apparently Nvidia released a driver today for the Geforce 540m card. Its one of their verde drivers that now official supports the 540m. I was wondering if its cool to install or should i just stick with the Dell updates? Has anyone tried it out yet?

Just played dirt 2 with the new driver and bios A4. Everything seems fine. Game seems to play a little smoother. Fan seems to kick on a little more, but not much, and the gpu idles in the low 40's instead of the normal high 40's. This is with stock clocks.

Hey guys i just bought new Dell Xps 15 ( L502X) with 2Gb Nvdia 540 M GT.

I am having problem with scaling , there is no such option coming in Nvdia Control panel , when i launch NFS Most wanted or prince of persia , game just scale to half of screen , it do not fill the screen.

Any idea how to fix this in Xps 15 L502X ?
