Need info on dv7t quad edition

Might buy one of these.

Has anyone bought it with the 160GB SSD option?

What brand and model SSD do they use? They will not tell me.

Also, what is the RAM speed? Is it 1333 MHZ

If I get the SSD option, do they install the OS on it, or is the OS installed on the HDD?

Does the machine have a dedicated number pad on the keyboard?

Is the case material bad w/fingerprints?

Is upgrading to the 2720 or 2820 processor worth it?

Thanks.

Reply 1 : Need info on dv7t quad edition

The case appears to be glossy, also the color is actually brown not black, and personally the whirled up at the back design is kind of lame.

Reply 2 : Need info on dv7t quad edition

Jeffmatthews,

I have alot of the same questions, haven't been able to get many answers though as I don't think anyone here has actually got theirs yet and there aren't any reviews or anything online so its pretty much everyone is just as much in the dark as everyone else.

From the demo though both the new dv6 and dv7 have dedicated number pads on their keyboards.

I think I read somewhere that the ram speed is 1333 and I know I've read posts with people wondering if it would handle 1600 if you upgraded the processor since the base processor only supports 1333 and lower. Nothing definite on memory though.

I would HOPE that they would put the OS on the 160gb SSD if it was included, if they put it on the 500 and left the 160gb for data that would just be stupid although not impossible i suppose. Im more concerned about what 160gb ssd they are using as ive read about vendors using 2nd rate SSDs to keep their costs down and performance suffers.

The processor upgrade may or may not be worth it. Its a marginal update speed wise but the upgraded CPU supports 1600 speed ram if the computer can take it and I think it has better virtualization support. I wouldn't update to the 2.7ghz base speed as thats a dual core instead of a quad.

Reply 3 : Need info on dv7t quad edition

Thanks. I did see a posting where someone says the SSD is the Intel X-25. While this model does not show impressive write speeds, compared to others, I have seen only positive reviews (though not a great many reviews). One common comment about this model is that it is considered reliable, whereas, I have seen many comments on other models about how they arrive DOA, or crash or degrade quickly.

I can definitely say, from my perspective, that I would want reliable. I hate, with a passion, trying to figure out why my computer broke or does not work right, or spending hours of time transferring data from the old drive to the new. So, as far as I am concerned, I don't want to play around much with the possibility of drive failure. Hours wasted on trouble-shooting and transferring gobs of data are worth more to me than a couple hundred of bucks.

I think I'll just go ahead and get this computer and be done with it.

Here is a link to HP's SSD specs. The model number seems to coincide with Intel's, and it's specs do, too.

I have been considering a dv6 with an SSD and yes I have heard they use the older Intel X-25 SSD.

Personally I would go with Intel's newer SATA III 120GB 510 SSD.

Newegg.com - Intel 510 Series (Elm Crest) SSDSC2MH120A2K5 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

It is a cheaper to upgrade yourself than to order the older (slower) SSD from Intel.

Actually with the discounts its cheaper (259 vs 319) to get the 160 from HP and in the case of the dv7 there aren't any drive options that are 7200rpm except when paired with the 160gb ssd. I would prefer the newer/faster tech though.

Reply 8 : Need info on dv7t quad edition

Normally, I might prefer faster, too, but I really don't want to have to mess around with installing the SSD, all the software and all that. It's just so much more convenient to not have to any of that and to just get a computer to plug in and turn on.

And you're right about the discount. After 30%, the 160GB really isn't all to pricey.

Reply 9 : Need info on dv7t quad edition

anyone know if this will accept 1600 memory if you update the CPU to one that supports it? Also curious if the bluray writer does lightscribe.

Getting real close to saying what the hell and getting one of these.

Recent purchase 55" BRAVIA NX810 defective black smudge

I just bought a brand new (or what I thought was brand new) a 55" BRAVIA NX810. The store I bought it from (Sony Style Canada)said they had one in stock but it was an opened box item. So they told me that another store had a new unopened one and they could ship it to their location the very next day.

I was under the impression that I was getting a brand new (unopened) flat screen tv. When I picked the tv up the box was very dirty and had large scratches and dents in it.

Upon opening the box and assembling the stand I noticed a yellow sticky note in the middle of the screen. On that sticky note was written "Here" with an arrow pointing to the location. I thought...hmmm, how strange.

It turns out that the screen (where the sticky note was pointing) there is a very annoying black smudge. After trying to remove the black smudge with some windex and a cloth it never went away.

I can lightly push the screen in the vicinity of the smudge and it gets worse (appears even darker).

After spending my hard earned dollars and noticing that not only did I not receive a brand new tv...they one they claimed was brand new has already been opened and is obviously defective...and you can imagine I am pretty pissed off.

I will be heading to the store in the morning and demanding that they replace this defective tv with a brand new one.

I watch a lot of hockey and that black smudge on the screen against the white ice background is the only thing I can see now.

I went out of my way to aquire a van to save some bucks on shipping...the least Sony can do is deliver me a brand new (unboxed) tv and take this defective one back to the factory.

Any comments?

Seagate ST9500420AS Firmware Update

What is this?

- This is a firmware update for those who may need it. It's from Dell, not Seagate or Asus, so do it at your own risk.

Drive Model:

- The ST9500420AS is the Seagate 7200 500GB drive that came with my G73jh-A2.

Problems I had:

- I had a problem where my HDD would constantly click beep and when it did so would cause a slight intermitten pause to my system. This wasn't constant but every once in a while. This is a flaw in the firmware with the HDD's power saving. This happens when the HDD parks it's head for power saving.

- My HDDs were also pretty loud. The noise from my G73jh-A2 for a while I thought was my fan, but then I noticed the fan like noise was from the front, it's the HDDs.

- I also noticed the 2nd HDD showed errors on HDTune Pro 4, but the HDD had no errors, worked fine and passed all tests with other utilities.

- I noticed the transfer speed of large files from one partition to another or one HDD to the next was around 20 MB/S and sometimes as low as 15 MB/S

Normal Fix, Solution:

- Normally you just edit the Windows Power Saving options. You go to Power Saving, click on advanced settings and then find the Hard Drive setting and set it to Never. Not zero. You just keep scrolling down or hit the down button until it says Never.

- This forces your HDD to never go to sleep or park it's head. This means it's more responsive, no click beep noise etc.

Do you have a firmware where the above settings does nothing?

- I did. I found out that there is an updated firmware from Dell dated December, 2009. Seagate has made the ST9500420AS for quite a while, it's an old model. And the firmware they ship it retail with is old. Asus does not have an OEM model on this, it's just the retail model I believe.

- Mine shipped with 2SDM1, this update is 5SDM1

Download firmware:

Dell Download Site: Drivers and Downloads

If you don't want to deal with that, here is Zippyshare: http://www15.zippyshare.com/v/19556405/file.html

- The firmware is straight from Dell but I still scanned with MalwareBytes and MSE 2.0 just to reassure any of you.

- MD5: B171842A707A721161D6EC5AA0B96370

- SHA-1: 2D5847A0229AEEA3366634CCF457D608EE9A2AF1

Instructions:

Custom Instructions for R250679.EXE:

* PLEASE PRINT THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS *

For Bootable CD option

(PLEASE MAKE SURE A/C POWER IS BEING USED WHILE UPDATING YOUR HARD DRIVE)

1. Click on the (R250679.EXE) file and select "RUN" then "RUN" again.

2. Press "Continue" then "OK" to extract the files to the provided location.

3. If you have CD imaging software that supports the .ISO image format the file "C:DELLDriversR250679Seagate Utility.ISO" is an image for a bootable CD that will automatically run the application.

4. Boot to the CD.

5. The Seagate utility will start automatically.

6. Because this updates a Dell OEM firmware, it will not recognize your retail firmware, will not update and go straight to DOS prompt.

7. Force install the Firmware with the following line

8. FDLH -m HOLLIDAY -f 0005SDM1.LOD -i ST9500420AS -b -v

This will scan for all HDDs that are ST9500420AS and update them. So with one command line, both my HDDs were updated.

Don't have ISO Image Burner or just don't Nero, Roxio or any other junky bloated crap that sometimes just fail with DVD and DL DVDs?

- Imgburn! It's the fastest DVD/CD burning software I've come across. Completely free. Absolutely light weight, nothing there that you don't need. A very simple and easy to use GUI with a lot of information. And so far, not one failed DVD burn.

http://www.imgburn.com/

Results of the Firmware Update?

- FINALLY NO MORE CLICK BEEP NOISE, QUIETER AND MORE RESPONSIVE!

- My transfer speed was around 20MB/S from one HDD2 to HDD1 and now it's at around 64-120 MB/S.

As here can see I have the latest new Firmware 0005SDM1

Automatic Acoustic Management (IDE Only, AHCI not supported, haven't found an AHCI supported tool in 64 bit mode yet

This is what keeps your HDD quiet. After the flash the AAM may have been disabled. To resolve this use HDDScan

1. Download: http://hddguru.com/software/2006.01.22-HDDScan/

2. Unzip to any directory.

3. Run HDDScan.exe as administrator

4. Select the drive you want to adjust in the "Select Drive" drop down.

5. Select Tasks > Features > IDE Features.

6. If AAM is disabled the "On" label in the Automatic Acoustic Management box will be red. Change the value in the "Current" text box to match the value in the "Recommended" text box.

7. Press the "Set" button. The "On" label should turn green and your drive should instantly become noticeably quieter.

Seems few didn't read what I wrote or why I posted this. This isn't to speed up your HDD to something like an SSD. C'mon use your head, don't fantasize. This is if you notice like I did I wasn't getting the expected performance from a 7200 HDD, power management issues, and some other oddities.

Keep this thread clean for those who have issues with their ST9500420AS 500 GB drive that the G73jh-A2 and countless other laptops come equipped with.

- This isn't the thread to market or boast about how awesome your SSD is. Plenty of other threads to do that.

i don't have the problems you've mentioned so i am not going to do nothing

Reply 6 : Seagate ST9500420AS Firmware Update

The thing loaded up with a green background and a command prompt appeared, but when I put in the command, it said no firmware file was found?

First I extracted the files and it made a folder called Dell with some folders to click through, then it came into a folder with another folder called files and Seagate Utility. So I right clicked Seagate Utility and opened it with ImgBurn and burned it. Was I supposed to do something with the folder called files too?

Reply 7 : Seagate ST9500420AS Firmware Update

No... As per direction you are supposed to burn the image file. Segate Utility ISO.

Reply 8 : Seagate ST9500420AS Firmware Update

Ok, that's what I did, but it doesn't work, the thing pops up when the computer starts, then I type in the command and it says: Error Opening Firmware file.

Ok I fixed it, this is what happened, you wrote in:

FDLH -m HOLLIDAY -f 0005SSDM1.LOD -i ST9500420AS -b -v

but it should be: FDLH -m HOLLIDAY -f 0005SDM1.LOD -i ST9500420AS -b -v

You put an extra "S" in the "0005SDM1.LOD" part

B6500 Wireless128-bit Setup

I feel stupid for asking this, but I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong. I have my router set up with WEP 128-bit wifi security. When I go to the wireless security screen on the router admin page, it gives me a 26-digit hex number. I go over to the B6500, but when I try to enter it, it stops me at 25-characters. Aren't all 128-bit WEP keys 26 characters? Am I entering the wrong thing?

I assume I'm doing something or there'd be a lot of people on here complaining about this happy Any help appreciated!

Reply 1 : B6500 Wireless128-bit Setup

The Cnet Networking Forum advises to discontinue use of WEP no matter how many bits. The troubles are now legendary and it is so insecure that simple software let's folk onto a WEP (protected?) network in about 2 minutes. And even if you add MAC filters, this only slows them down a few seconds.

Fix? Move to WPA or WPA2 PSK.
Bob

Reply 2 : B6500 Wireless128-bit Setup

Okay, good enough I guess happy Thanks, I'll do that!

Reply 3 : B6500 Wireless128-bit Setup

My Samsung Blu Ray worked fine for about 8 months. I always entered 26 characters for my wireless set up. Then, I got kicked off..again! Now, it will only let me enter 25 characters. So, I can't get on any longer. Is the only way around this to get a new router??
Feeling just as stupid. Perhaps more as I don't know how to change a WEP for a WPA.

fried U50f motherboard help

In early January I bought a U50f from newegg.com. About a month ago, I believe my laptop had some sort of short and confirmed by Geek Squad that the motherboard is done. And I have been looking all over for a Service Guide to help me take apart the laptop so I can replace the motherboard properly. I just spent like $500 to buy and i really like this thing, plus its the only thing I can afford right now for school.

So if someone can help with this, I would really appreciate it A LOT! Thanks uys!

Reply 1 : fried U50f motherboard help

Did you buy it refurbished? If you bought it new and non-refurbished it should still be under warranty. See: Asus RMA and Warranty Guide

Disassembly looks pretty straightforward for the bottom chassis. Take the screws off and then probably eject the CD tray (sometimes there are screws where the optical drive is) and the SD card blank if you have one. Then take the keyboard off and remove the remaining screws that are holding the top case to the chassis. It looks a lot like the U80V which I have partially disassembled before and also the U20 which I have fully disassembled a few times. I don't know of a disassembly guide for yours.

Reply 2 : fried U50f motherboard help

yeah it is a refurb,

ok well ima start disassembling it right now and document as much as i can. ill take any guides that is similar to a U50f

if anyone has any tips or a place that can help me with this, it would be awesome!

Reply 3 : fried U50f motherboard help

Go slow and get/draw a placement map so you can remember which screws go where.

Reply 4 : fried U50f motherboard help

ok so i started to take everything apart and realized that the keyboard is attached to the top piece of the laptop, there is no way of removing it, it is all one piece, except for the bezel which you can see on the side.

Issue#1: right next to the back screw for the dvd drive and the RAM, is this piece that has no opening and as i pry the top piece of the laptop open, it feels like this is holding it back. and since its all one piece i have no idea how to remove it.

Issue#2: the second thing that is holding me back from removing the top piece is shown the picture. it feels like a screw is holding it down but i have no idea where or how i can get to it.

Reply 5 : fried U50f motherboard help

This should hopefully help: How to Install an Asus U50F Keyboard | eHow.com

Sounds like there are screws underneath where the bezel was.

Reply 6 : fried U50f motherboard help

thanks namaiki, the post is actually wrong.

after reading it, i found no screws just 2 that hold down the top piece to the motherboard. on step 3, i looked everywhere on the laptop and found absolutely no screws. then my finger slipped by accident and actually pushed out the keyboard partially. and slowly removed it like the bezel and it pretty much straight forward from to switch out the motherboard. now i just gotta buy it and hope for the best.

Reply 7 : fried U50f motherboard help

There should be a small hole that you can stick a small flathead into in order to push the optical drive out by a small metal tab.

XPS 1645 - WIFI drops

Hi All,

I've have my XPS 1645 for a while now, and I've never had any problem with it. Lately, I checked in an hotel for 2 month (business trip) and I've been having problems with my WIFI connection that sometimes work and out of the blue it drops (still connected but no internet connectivity). It's an unsecured wireless AP, my other laptop works perfectly without any interruptions, so is my iPad and smartphone.

I tried, re-installing the driver from intel and dell, I tried in safe mode with networking, also tried rebooting/shutdown/sleep, removing the network and connecting again, turning wifi on/off.... nothing happens, it starts working whenever it wants and stops working whenever it wants.

Any ideas?

Note: it's an Intel WIFI 5300

Reply 1 : XPS 1645 - WIFI drops

Some hotels reset their wireless everyday; when I stayed at a Sheraton a few months ago, they always reset their wireless around 7pm and I had to go thru the hassle of reconfiguring again every day. Total pain in the @ss, especially if I was streaming video at the time

If your wireless keeps dropping out around the same time everyday, it's very likely the hotel

Reply 2 : XPS 1645 - WIFI drops

This hotel actually gives you the option of connecting for 1 month without the need to reconnect each 24 hours. The drops are more frequents like each 30 minutes (although not periodic).... Plus, all my other equipments (other laptop, phone, smartphone) doesn't have this problem... it's only my xps1645. I even asked a colleague in the same hotel. He never had this problem

Reply 3 : XPS 1645 - WIFI drops

Maybe your Wifi card is dying? I'm assuming you don't have another one on hand? I've never had an issue with an Intel wireless card.

Reply 4 : XPS 1645 - WIFI drops

It looks like it, I called Dell's support and they are sending me a new one, it should arrive today. I will replace it and see what happens

Reply 5 : XPS 1645 - WIFI drops

Another thing to try is to swap around the antennas... I bought my laptop second hand, and it obviously frustrated the previous owner to the point where he had purchased an external USB wireless...

I swapped the anntenas around - now it works perfectly!

Give it a shot if your new card doesn't work...

Reply 6 : XPS 1645 - WIFI drops

I've already replaced the new wifi card I've got from dell... It has been working for 10 hours non-stop so I assume it was a hardware problem (continuous ping tests...). I will wait for a couple of day before sending back the old one, just to be sure. The strange thing is that the wifi connectivity would not drop, only internet connectivity part of it drops.

On a side note, Dell's customer support has been amazing for me. It hardly took me 20 seconds to explain the situation and they directly said they are sending me a new card.

Reply 7 : XPS 1645 - WIFI drops

Well glad to hear Dell came through for you on this one. Sometimes it happens, defective things happen, that's why warranties exist. Never had an Intel WLAN card die on me though.

G53 Stuttering - I give in!

I've finally given in trying to troubleshoot this myself - I've spent more time trying to fix this laptop than anything I've ever owned hehe

The machine in question is a UK spec G53JW-IX162V and I have to say - other than this issue - Im in love with the damned thing!

Firstly - thanks for taking the time to run / use this forum. Its been fantastic in helping me try different things - unfortunately none of them work so far.

I have gone through the forum plenty - but if I have missed a killer 'how to fix this issue' thread, feel free to point it out - Ive got thick skin

Ok so where to begin? How about the problem....

When I play any game it seems (by any so far I've tried Rift, World of Warcraft, Mass Effect, Dragon Age 2, World in Conflict) I get stuttering during gameplay and often this manifests itself as a loop or break in audio too. It can sometimes be 20 mins before I get one, or it can be every couple of minutes.

Before you jump in with "ah yes, this fixes that" let me give you a brief overview of how I've spent the last 2 weeks!

- Restored base ASUS build from recovery disks

- Clean WIN7 install then ASUS driver disk for non-bloaty install

- Tried many (and I mean many) NVIDIA drivers ranging from stock to ASUS downloads, to Latest WHQ, to Beta, to Leaked 270 drivers

- Updated Audio Drivers to Latest

- Installed Intel Chipset drivers / Rapid Raid (normal install / forced install)

- Adjusted WIN7 pagefile (none, double ram, seperate partition)

- Disabled Superfetch

- Disabled Aero

- Checked RAM

- Checked HDD

- Disabled Nic / WLAN

- Updated Nic / WLAN

- Updated BIOS

- Reverted BIOS

- Disabled Core parking for i7

- Adjusted HDD Wait3 timer

- Tweaked all settings in Nvidia CP

- Swapped Refresh from 120 to 60

- Disable HD audio

- Disable Nvidia HD audio

- Updated DX9

- Disabled AV

- Minimum background apps

and I'm sure some other things I can't remember yet.... If any suggestions are mentioned that I have tried come up, I will update this list.

I've read that some people blame WIN7 for this, some blame the i7, a lot blame the Video card and Verde drivers, some blame the HD audio and the others like me are just running in circles with no joy hehe

So.. I decided to finally register and perhaps get this issue solved finally. I an happy to try anything - even those things I've already tried if someone feels strongly enough

Well this is me, asking you to help me get my little G53 ticking along nicely.

Thanks in advance for any help or support.

Reply 1 : G53 Stuttering - I give in!

Have you tried running your games in DX10?

Reply 2 : G53 Stuttering - I give in!

Thanks for the reply!

I haven't done any kind of DX forcing - as far as I'm aware though - Rift, WoW and Mass Effect all default to DX9 - Dragon Age 2 defaults to DX11.

Happy to try if you know an easy way to test

Reply 3 : G53 Stuttering - I give in!

Do you have a momentus Xt drive installed?

If you think you have gone through everything software possible, you should take in consideration

1. monitoring temps - high temps lead to throttling that induces stuttering

or

2. a hardware failure, such as the psu not delivering enough current to the laptop under high loads (thus throttling that induces stuttering)

or

3. psu/gpu going berzerk on you.

Reply 4 : G53 Stuttering - I give in!

I've monitored temps and they seem no higher than those others have posted. I have considered HW failure - but there seems to be far too many other people out there with similar problems for it to be that I think. Not ruling it out mind.

The drive in mine is a WD - I've changed the wait3 timers at bios level on the drive from the default of 4secs to 5 mins.

Reply 5 : G53 Stuttering - I give in!

RMA in this case? As you said you are running out of things to try, which might lead to think that it's a hardware failure. Are you still under warranty?

Only had it 2 weeks.

In my opinion RMA will be pointless as you actually have to be a gamer and play the games to see the fault - it won't show on a benchmark or burn in. I will be without the machine for a while and then have it sent back to me with no fault found and a bill for the courier for my trouble.

My money is on there is something I'm just not doing or a combination of things that need to be done together - I see on the ROG fourm they have a list of recommended drivers for the G73 (G73 Series Driver and Application Reference) - would this be a good list to follow for the G53 too? Although Chastity's sig states its G73/G53 the thread itself seems to be just for the G53. Is it the fact that the machines are almost identical?

Appreciate the suggestion buddy - but seems a bit extreme to get a gaming laptop working. I do have another notebook I could swap drives in - think its a Hitachi 5400.

Reply 8 : G53 Stuttering - I give in!

I would swap the internal drive to a 7200 rpm HDD and then throw the WD in 2.5" usb case.

Reply 9 : G53 Stuttering - I give in!

Well it does make sense that it would be the drive - I dont see any such stuttering in my other laptop even though its a lower spec - so I think I'll try swapping the drives and reinstalling as a test first and then if sucessful - I'll be going for a 7200 as suggested.

Any other recommendations than the WD? Don't really want to give them my money if they have caused my frustrations! hehe

I see the Seagate Hybrid is getting rave reviews - just not sure I want to throw another 100 at a machine thats already cost me 1300

What about two smaller 7200's and run them together in a stripe? I know I'd need another caddy but I assume the onboard controller can handle that - other than the extra battery drain are there any real issues or bennefits?

x61 or x60 --> SXGA screen

Hi Guys,

I know this has been discussed one too many times. But the purpose of this thread is very simple; and that is to consolidate what is needed for each model to be able to put in an SXGA screen.

There quite a few threads, but it's not always clear cut as to what is needed for each model.

*** Calling Erik and other experts to please help consolidate this. ***

Purpose: Install a BOEHYDIS HV121P01-101 or HV121P01-100 LCD module in any of the x60/x60s/x60t/x61/x61s/x61t notebooks.

Here we go:

Model -- Requirements

x60 -- Modified BIOS, Harness Cable.

x60s -- Modified BIOS, Harness Cable, Assembly Panel modification (Bezel is very thin on the x60s)

x60t -- Requires an entirely different part no with the digitizer and all. Can't just put the LCD in here. But if wanted to, it can be done. No BIOS or Harness needed.

x61 -- No BIOS needed, No Harness Cable Needed. Just Plug and Play.

x61s -- BIOS needed, Harness Cabled needed. Assembly Panel / LCD Lid modification (Bezel is very thin on the x61s with UltraLight screen)

x61s -- BIOS needed, Harness Cable needed. No Assembly Panel / LCD Lid Modification.

x60t -- Requires an entirely different part no with the digitizer and all. Can't just put the LCD in here. But if wanted to, it can be done. No BIOS or Harness needed.

This is what I have gathered so far in all the reading that I have done. Do I have the above right?

Thanks a ton!!!

Reply 1 : x61 or x60 --> SXGA screen

IIRC, the X61s units that shipped without an Ultralight screen use the same lid assembly as the X61.

Oh

I thought the whole point of x61s was the Ultralight screen and a slightly smaller chassis?

You are saying there are x61s w/o the Ultralight screen?

Thanks for the confirmation lead_org. I modified the initial post to reflect this info.

Am I on par with everything else that I have mentioned?

Thanks!

Reply 5 : x61 or x60 --> SXGA screen

i'm not quite sure where to start on this one.   there are a lot more details that go into this mod than a simple panel, jumper harness, or LCD housing assembly.   none of the above is a bolt-in change and everything requires extensive cutting and taping to work.

on top of that, i've stopped fabricating cables.   the overseas "manufacturer" on ebay who copied my cable doesn't appear to be offering them anymore.   that tends to throw a wrench in the gears.

the HV121P01-101 assembly is too thick at the top to fit correctly without cutting off a large part of the stainless steel display frame.   electrically it's the same as the -100 but the physical frame is different.   i've used them before in a pinch but wouldn't recommend anyone try what i tried.   honestly, i wouldn't even recommend this panel.

regarding the tablets, they require different bezels depending on the display FRU used.   the X61T SXGA+ panel is direct-bonded glass and the X60T SXGA+ panel is foam-taped polycarbonate.   each require a specific bezel if upgrading from an XGA panel.

to make the whole thing worse, these SXGA+ panels are becoming near impossible to find.   when you do, they're $300+ US and in questionable condition due to the CCFL backlights.

Reply 6 : x61 or x60 --> SXGA screen

Hi Erik, thanks for getting over here and providing your expertise.

Would you say that out of all of those models listed above, the x61/x61s (with regular screen) is the easiest of mods and just plug and play?

I have been doing a whole bunch of searching and came across this thread here: [FS] FS: X61/X61S SXGA+ LCD Panel - SOLD - RedFlagDeals.com Forums

If you read his last post all the way at the bottom, you'll see he says it's plug and play installing the LCD module into an x61.

Is that not true?

I have found two vendors that carry these panels and it'll run me about $250 just for the LCD / panel. I also saw one post where someone is trying to sell his on another forum; have a pm out to them so I'm waiting to hear back.

That plus, I figured ~$300 - $350 for the x61 off ebay and I'll have a nice SXGA notebook for $550 - $600.

I'm looking for the easiest way out w/o the BIOS hack, Harness or having to shave the screen.

Thanks for your time and help!!!

Reply 7 : x61 or x60 --> SXGA screen

no, it's not a plug-and-play installation by any stretch of the imagination.   i've built eleven of these systems so far (both X60 and X61 variants) and know with 100% unequivocal, definitive certainty that that panel as it came from BOE Hydis will not plug into the factory X6x display cable without shorting +3.3V to ground and frying the system planar.   for that panel to work in a notebook, it would need 13 out of 20 pins remapped.   in short, that guy is blowing smoke.

on top of that, the ears you see sticking off the sides of the panels need to be carefully trimmed.   the only proper way to do this is to separate the stainless frame from the plastic so that each can be cut individually.

note that the seller doesn't show what's on the back of the panel, how it's connected, or it actually installed in a system.   he also doesn't show the BIOS revision.   without proof of his claims, i'm hoisting the BS flag on this one.

Reply 8 : x61 or x60 --> SXGA screen

OMG! So, this means I'm done? My dream of making a SXGA notebook is shot?

It's time to put a fork in it?

Reply 9 : x61 or x60 --> SXGA screen

or just get a X60/X61 tablet with the SXGA+ screen.

BluRay Burner for CF-28

Thanks guys. Well, it looks like I'm down in flames as far a viewing from my 28. How about just burning and then playing on a BluRay player. I'm thinking of making BluRay disks of my videos instead of regular DVD and if I could get the 28 to burn them, even slowly, they would be compatible with showing them on a composite player, or remote, is I guess is what I'm trying to say. I don't care so much about watching them on the 28, just burning the digital video and then sharing them with my friends. I'm trying to switch over so I can be "high tech", crisp and clear. Any ideas on this? Thanks. Spark

NTI Media Maker 9 Premium:

► Hardware Requirements

IBM PC or Compatible, Pentium III 900MHz or higher

256MB RAM

500MB of available free disc space for software installation

10GB working space for copying or creating DVD discs.

Graphics card capable of 1024x768 and 16-bit color.

Windows 7, Vista or XP SP3

Windows Media Player 11 or higher and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 or higher are required for XP SP3

I have a writer in my cf-30 mk-2

Using specialty software I can playback bluray, you need over 256mb video card for that

I have Roxio v10 pro aprox $100 for that software, for dvd writing

Give it a try if you don't mind the software costs,if it does not work out you only need to buy an external usb caddy and use it with a more capable computer

Reply 6 : BluRay Burner for CF-28

Thanks TopCop: I've got everything but the SP-3 and the WMP 11. I only have Wmp 9. I tried SP-3 and didn't like it. Seemed to bugger the works. Don't know why. I can't seem to upgrade to WMP 11 and don't know why. Might be something with the XP program that was on the computer when I got it.

Is this Media Player 9 just for playing or is it a burning program? I would like to get a burner that I can swap out for my multi drive and put right into the computer. Are you saying that I need an external burner to run the MP9? I Thanks. Spark

When you say "Burn" a BluRay, do you mean burning an existing .iso file to disc, or using your CF-28 to transcode .avi or .dvx files to create a playable Blu-Ray disc useable on home Blu-Ray players? Transcoding from either DVD (regular or Blu-Ray) source or most common video filetypes requires a LOT more horsepower than simply burning an .iso file created elsewhere.

If you wish to be able to decrypt and create your own .iso files from a Blu-Ray disc (Using AnyDVD HD/CloneDVD HD or similar decryption/iso authoring software) you will be sorely disappointed - as an example, my CF-28 1GHZ/768MB takes 6 hours to transcode a single Dual-layer DVD (720P res, 8.5GB MAX) to fit on a single-layer DVD (720P-480P resolution variable, 4.7GB MAX). To work, your decryption software must decrypt the disc before you can create the .iso to burn your new disc, as well as running in the background as an intermediary between your source optical drive and your disc authoring software while it creates the .iso file.

Blu-Ray format runs between 25-50GB per disk, so figure a LOT more time and an appropriate amount of HDD space to use for temp files as big as the target media; this of course assumes you have enough memory to run both your decryptor and your disc authoring software at the same time.

AnyDVD HD Decryptor Software System Requirements

* IBM-compatible PC with a minimum 2 GHz Pentium-class microprocessor and 512 MB RAM

* Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000 (32 & 64 bit)

* 4 MB hard disk space

* For Blu-ray or HD DVD media, a Blu-ray or HD DVD compliant drive is required.

* For HD decryption and ripping, the minimum OS is Windows 2000 (latest SP).

* PC player software usually requires Windows XP SP2 as minimum OS.

Other HD decryptors will most likely have similar system requirements.

G73 i7-720 OC

Not seen very much info about it, last i was able to find is it cant be done any way other than the twin turbo mode. Anyone know of a thread that says how to OC the 720?

Reply 1 : G73 i7-720 OC

You can use a program called setFSB to change the bus speeds. It is not free, however. Requires a $5 donation.

Reply 2 : G73 i7-720 OC

I got the 820QM processor instead of 720 and have tried to acheive some results using SetFsb. In a way the application did what its supposed to, it raised the fsb/processor speed. However the performance in benchmarks and fps dropped just like it does when you enable twin turbo mode (twin turbo mode does the same as Setfsb if i understand it correctly). It pussels me and i havent yet found an answear to why you loose performance when it should be increasing. Perhaps its a cpu design thing, i dont know.....

Reply 3 : G73 i7-720 OC

Weird that. Sounds like another thing Asus has to find a solution to. A working turbo button.

Reply 4 : G73 i7-720 OC

The performance drop is due to how the multipliers work with intel turbo boost. At stock bclk of 133MHz on the 720qm, the overall clock speed it 13 (12 + 1 due to turbo boost) x 133MHz (1.729GHz)

With twin turbo, the bclk is raised to 142MHz if i remember correctly. Due to the higher fsb clock, turbo boost doesn't kick in so the overall clock speed is 12 x 142 (1.704MHz).

That is when all four cores are used of course.

In order to get an increase in performance, the fsb clock has to be increased enough and heat can become a problem if you overclock too much. Just take a look at the difference in CPU temperature when twin turbo is on.

The bottom line is, you have to use setfsb to gain an increase in CPU speed. I saw a thread somewhere in the asus forums dedicated to OC the i7 on a G73 where it was successfully overclocked.

Reply 5 : G73 i7-720 OC

wasn't this it?

its not on the g73 but it is about the i7-720qm

Reply 7 : G73 i7-720 OC

This was discussed in detail in the G73 Benchmark thread

Reply 8 : G73 i7-720 OC

You didnt OC it enough to see a performance increase .

You have to OC it more than what turbo boost does, since when youre OCing, the turbo boost doesnt kick in.

I have overclocked my i7-820qm to 2,2 ghz on all 4 cores, so the performance increase becomes noticable. Havent tried more yet and i dont feel like it since i have no real use in overclocking the CPU.

Ah, and since you to have a 820qm, how much did you move the fsb slider in Setfsb? Did you do anything else in Setfsb to make it work or was it just the slider you worked with?

Issues with PN50C7000 set as C8000 in service menu

What if any issues have been experienced setting via service menu, the PNxxC7000 as PNxxC8000 via the Service Menu?

Aside from getting Motion Judder options (on the C7000) and two additional calibration settings (CAL-Day and CAL-Night); what else is occurring to the TV?

I have noticed changes how standard def HD is displayed. Regardless of setting 16:9 or Screen Fit options, the standard def HD (like CNN HD) is cropped to a 4:3 format or a shrunken 16:9 format equally centered with black bars top/bottom.

Are there other issues with running the PNxxC7000 in PNxxC8000 mode?

Very Happy with my T215

I have to say that I am quite impressed with the T215. I do admit that the silver base (the pattern) really isn't my taste but for $499 I can get used to it. Overall, the build quality is higher than my expectations. I'm also pleased that it comes with an Atheros (AR9285) wifi card. I do wish that bluetooth was an option. I'm installing Ubuntu 10.04 and everything just works.

I know this is old but for anybody researching, my T215D-1150 has an open mini PCI express slot under where your right palm rests inside the case. I bought a Dell 370 bluetooth card and an antenna for it, covered up pin # 20 on the card (the BIOS tries to turn it off automatically otherwise--whitelisted), and snaked the antenna through the case. I now have internal bluetooth! I did need to install the dell proprietary drivers in windows 7 BTW. Ubuntu found it no problem. I'm going to try and wire in a pair of USB female plugs a little later and stuff a Logitech Unifying receiver and a bluetooth dongle in there.

I know this will start getting cliche, but i need to address a few things directly at the a8jm owners. and what better way to start than this?

Firs of all, how are your keyboard keys handling? Im a heavy user on my keyboard, and though it has only been 14 days since acquiring the notebook, im already noticing wear on the keyboard, primarily the space bar (jump for all my games).

Second, has anyone figured out how to clean the area above the quicklaunch buttions? There seems to be alot of stuff trapped in there, and i can't find anything to remove it.

Lastly, for those of you who have tried the on-board mic, does yours pick up your typing as well?

I used the latest drivers from Nvidia, and lost 3d functionality - do I need to install a separate 3d control driver from nvidia? Anyone able to confirm this? Thanks.

G53: display no longer dims when idle?

My laptop display doesn't dim after 5 minutes of being idle like it used to. I changed the power settings but that didn't help. The screen is always at 100% even after an hour of being idle. I don't have anything actively running. Even if I leave the laptop idle after restarting it, it still doesn't dim.

Any help would be appreciated.

do you have power 4 gear installed?

What is the difference between i5 460m, 480m and 560m?

yeah so am thinking about getting an xps 15... can someone tell me what the difference is with each of the processors?

i think that the first batch were faulty or something but am not sure

Reply 1 : What is the difference between i5 460m, 480m and 560m?

They're all basically the same. They just have slightly different clock speeds.

460m = 2.53 GHz (boosts to 2.8)

480m = 2.66 GHz (boosts to 2.9)

560m = 2.66 GHz (boosts to 3.2)

Maybe you're thinking of the sandy bridge problem, where the motherboards were faulty. All the sandy bridge names start with a 2 though. Those ones there are the 1st generation i series. They fixed the problem with sandy bridge now though.

You might want to think about getting the newer xps 15, which has the sandy bridge processors + better graphics cards.

Reply 2 : What is the difference between i5 460m, 480m and 560m?

As it's been stated, all those i5 are just higher clocked dual cores. It really is a marketing ploy, more "GHz" just normally using your computer doesn't equate to a performance gain.

Only the initial launch of Sandy Bridge was affected, all the stuff being sold now has been fixed with B3 stepping.

No Mobile Broadband on the E6x20?

Anyone seen any GPS/Mobile Broadband options for the new E6x20s? I can't find it, but they might be still juggling the online options.

So far, I'm underwhelmed by the improvements here vs the E6x10 series. Is there any compelling reason to go with the new ones? I am upgrading from an M1210.

I'm inclined to wait for the inevitable discounts. The E6x20 series does seem to offer improvements, although I wouldn't pay much more than the current E6x10 for those improvements, modest as they are. Wait and see.

I am actually talking about the HSPA cards with GPS. I thought these would be available in addition to the wifi/wimax. Also, I don't see the same options for System Tracking - ie, dealing with missing/stolen laptops.

I have been busy reinstalling Windows 7 64bit on it and following one of the guides here as there was too much bloatware on it.

Have just tested F1 2010 on the laptop, I reckon with newer drivers I should get a slight increase as I am using the HP official drivers from their website.

Settings 800X480, Medium Graphics, 2XMSAA, approx. 21fps showing in fraps.

I have the IOBits game booster software in the background.

Anything else you want me to show you?

Windows Experience Index shows 5, the graphics being the lowest, will take a photograph of it.

Logo illuminates when switched on

Sound quality through headphones is great, not sure about onboard speakers yet but they are Altec Lansing branded. Also notice the infra-red reciever, it works with the included remote control that I do not have with me at the moment

Wallpaper matches the case, also a free blue bag with dragon logo comes in the box with cleaning cloth.

Webcam on top has 2 microphones next to it and an led light although not tested that out yet or how to switch the light on just yet!

My graphic drivers are from the official support section on the HP website, I need to try and track down some newer ones but fps isn't too bad from the above settings

Am pretty happy with this laptop. Bit heavier and bulkier than my previous Q330 I had and almost double the thickness of my old Asus UL30a but much more powerful. Am happy with it so far.

Hi, I bought this laptop recently and wanted to re-install windows 7 but the laptop won't recognise any bootable disks! Boot order is set to cd drive first but it seems to just skip it. How can I boot from disk? Any help would be great

Reply 6 : Bought a HP Pavilion dv3-2310ea

Unfortunately I have no idea why, not sure what the shortcut is but am sure one of the F buttons brings up a boot menu, where you can choose what to boot up, will try and find out. Am about to put my laptop on auction to sell it, have bought another one.

Reply 7 : Bought a HP Pavilion dv3-2310ea

Hi Guys,

I had to replace HDD as it became corrupt so swapped out for a new one I had spare.

However recently my intel graphics card is showing signs of being faulty, but HP will not help unless I have a recovery partition and install their HP bloatware.

Anyone have a set of recovery disc they could iso up?

They are asking for 34 for the recovery DVD even though I have a retail widows 7 and a license.

I can't find my recovery discs I made when I got this last year.

I appreciate any help on this.

Thanks

Asus and Cyberlink Bloatware

I've been going through and removing bloatware from my A52F but I'm not certain about the Cyberlink software that came pre-installed. I know the CyberLink PowerDVD 9 should probably be kept but I'm unsure about these others.

CyberLink LabelPrint

CyberLink MediaShow Espresso

CyberLink Power2Go

CyberLink Power Director

Also uncertain about

Asus LifeFrame 3

Asus Mult

Asus Video Magic

Trend Micro (Only because I already use McAfee)

These programs stood out to me as ones I may not have any need for but I'd like another opinion on these if any are important or vital to have on my notebook.

Reply 1 : Asus and Cyberlink Bloatware

Hi Fox07, please see the excellent Asus Utility and Bloatware Guide

I'm not sure about the other cyberlink stuff, but you can probably open the programs and figure out if you want them.

Reply 2 : Asus and Cyberlink Bloatware

For multimedia packages such as Cyberlink, Roxio and others, sometimes the components can be separated and uninstalled individually - other times not as everything is tied together.

Upgrading W701 to Radeon HD6970M

Well, at least trying to...

Initial try - fail. Physically card fits in MXM slot perfectly, no problems with heatsink fit either.

But the screen stays black after boot. My initial thoughts were that it simply won't even start booting, so reverted back to original Quadro. Search of BIOS white/blacklisting proved nothing suspicious.

Now I realised that possible it did try to boot, only display output was wrong (maybe external display). Silly that I didn't disable boot on passwords, so it's possible was just sitting there on password entry screen (invisible due too display being off). Need to connect speakers to listen if its beeping and for how long.

Will try more this week. If HD6970 will not work at all, I am thinking about trying HD5870 or NVidia cards - may be will be more luck with these.

Reply 1 : Upgrading W701 to Radeon HD6970M

Very interesting... I know many aren't really interested in tweaking the W701 into a gaming beast, but I'm definitely curious as to how it'll turn out. Have you considered attaching a second monitor to see if it will output in that, just in case?

Reply 2 : Upgrading W701 to Radeon HD6970M

Yeah, trying external output is obvious choice.

First of all, I will just disable boot on passwords and see if HDD starts blinking, if so, then I will try Fn video output switch, second monitor or remote vPro connection to see.

Its possible that RGB LED display needs some specific initialization, as I know that Lenovo provides customized VBIOS on their Quadros.

Reply 3 : Upgrading W701 to Radeon HD6970M

Im interested in finding if it will work even though I dont game anymore.

Reply 4 : Upgrading W701 to Radeon HD6970M

Was wondering where u got the card and how much. Interested in getting one too.

Reply 5 : Upgrading W701 to Radeon HD6970M

Wow - I'm going to have to watch this topic. If you manage to succeed with this project, you'll be giving a major boost to my plans of picking up a W701ds later this year. If I can toss in a decent gaming graphics card, I could get rid of my desktop for good!

Reply 6 : Upgrading W701 to Radeon HD6970M

Fail. When speakers connected, there are one long and two short beeps - means it didn't initialise BIOS/hardware and watchdog timer has triggered.

I have procured the Alienware HD5870 - result is still the same, perfect physical fit, but won't boot into even initial BIOS screen, one long two short beeps.

So I went deeper and analysed the SBIOS. It did contain plenty of checks for "NVidia" hardware IDs, and even some nasty stuff in MXM init code (like calling int 10 inside int 15 MXM structure callback). So I tried my best and tried to mod the SBIOS to eliminate all these hardware ID checks/wierdnesses. But result is still the same - won't accept third party card, one long two short beeps.

So I have to conclude that while slot is indeed MXM electrically, there seem to be some very serious MXM software non-compliance going on, preventing from use of any generic MXM3 cards. Quick analysis shown that official Lenovo Quadro cards actually use a VBIOS specifically made for Lenovo, so probably some sort of wierd custom code to interact with W701 system side is there.

I am now going to seemingly last available option and going to try upgrading to Quadro 3800M. SBIOS has option ROM VBIOS copies for 2800M and 3800M in it (to ease updating I assume), so hopefully even non-Lenovo 3800M will work.

P.S. some strings in the BIOS were quite entertaining examples of Engrish

HP DV4 Pavilion Won't Even Boot with Recovery Disk

Last week, my DV4 laptop would not boot up. I ordered recovery disks from HP, and when they start up I get the "loading files" message followed by a message showing that it was looking for a drive letter (message never went away). Well, I just did a hard disk test and it said the hard disk has failed. What now?
1: Do I need to buy a new hard drive? If so, what about all of the pre-loaded software from HP? Out of shear stupidity, my over confidence in the product kept me from making the back ups myself.
2: Do I take it to a repair center? If so, how much would damage like this cost to repair by estimation?
3: Any other suggestions?
Any help would be great, thanks.

Reply 2 : HP DV4 Pavilion Won't Even Boot with Recovery Disk

Check in the "storage forum" for any possible recovery pgms. that may help. However, this is now a lesson in any procedure for future "backup plan". HP should still provide some direction into any s/w bundle and/or use this if possible to be issued the same s/w at reduced cost(maybe). This is why, one of the 1st things HP offers to do a "recovery DVDs" during the initial usage of PC.

AS for any warranty issues you need to start the process if you have any time left. HP will provide replacement(s) parts within the warranty guidelines. However, ther is no data recovery offered, its h/w only. At the same the replacement *may* be pre-installed bundle, but that's a long shot. If you want to recover any data or precious mementos, then proceed to google "recovert services" and surf for costs.

Again, if waaranty is provided and valid, start a warranty RMA#, etc. and return the laptop or service center to replace HD and/or reload OS maybe s/w bundle.

tada -----Willy happy

G71Gx Power Problems. Possible Short?

I have a G71Gx-RX05 that I purchased refurbished about 3.5 months ago. About a week ago, it would shut down randomly. Sometimes it would also not start at all, the ExpressGate button was not lit up and the power supply light was off. Now it continues to do that, the power supply works fine, putting out a constant 19 Volts. But if I plug it into the computer, it will die, the computer will not even flash any lights, and the power supply won't start back up unless i unplug it from the computer and wall for about 5 minutes.

I'm thinking this might be a short in the motherboard. I have checked that the processor and ram are seated correctly and that there is no loose metal or other pieces.

I have also tried removing the battery, it does not change anything.

Reply 1 : G71Gx Power Problems. Possible Short?

It sounds like some kind of hardware problem, if it won't charge it could be the DC jack on the laptop.

question about OC'ing my G73JH

I recently installed FFXIV on my G73 and put all the settings on high and put AA at 2x thinking my beast could handle it... it couldn't. it was laggy as hell, so I wanted to OC my 5870 to see if it would run more smoothly. I am using AMD's GPU clock tool and set the clocks to 800/1100. When I ran this clock I could only run COD:BO because my college sucks and blocks alot of games, but it ran with no problems at all. I tried puting the clocks up to 825/1150 and opened BO and it played for like 5 minutes then the graphics card stopped working. I am just curious if anyone else out there has the 5870 clocked higher than that and is able to play games without it crashing.

Reply 1 : question about OC'ing my G73JH

Yeah, AA really stresses the ATI cards, for some reason. I can clock up to about 875 / 1210 iirc ...

But each card is different. I bet your card runs cooler than mine :P

You need to remember that Mobility cards are not for hardcore gaming they should be able to run most games at full hd and high and some in ultra but they do not give what a desktop card can for instance the 5870m has 800 madd cores and desktop 1600.

FFXIV is extremely demanding as well you just have to run the benchmark to see that because I only get 3500 score which says you can run it medium to high but not at full HD and that was with my 5870 running at 800/1100 so overclocking is not going to make a lot of difference but will burn your temps. FFXIV has been massively critisised also for being poorly made and patches will probably gradually sort out the problems.

Also overclocking changes from game to game I can run BO at 900/1150 and it runs fine at 89oC max but if I try and overclock even a little with Gothic 4 Arcania it stops responding straight away. As DCx says it changes from board to board.

Sorry I should have been more clear I max out at 76oC but I always take the highest temperature through HWinfo32 which shows u all sections of the GPU and they vary. The dispIO is normally the lowest. Memory and diode are normally 10oC higher so you will probably be running about 87/88oC if you check HWinfo.

uhh, no I use HWinfo32 and my GPU thermal diode maxes out at 75C, which is the hottest, when playing BO. I think the dispIO is usually around 70-73 now. I used to run around 89C but I just repasted my GPU with arctic silver and it dropped my temps by 10C.

thnx for that info, cuz I think I have both of those enabled.

And to Dallers, yes I had a very good repaste experience. I had my step-dad apply the paste since I've never done it before, although this is my first laptop, and as he was applying the paste he says, "all you need is a little dab in the middle of the chip there and it'll cover the chip once you put the heatsink back on". He completely disregarded his advice and smothered the entire chip in arctic silver thermal paste however, I think I nicked something while I had the laptop torn apart, because my HWinfo does not register my CPU fan speed anymore :/
